Middle School Program (Grades 6-8)

Sixth grade marks the beginning of the middle school curriculum. Students are usually ages 11 & 12. Academic goals are focused on improving foundational academic skills. In Reading and Writing, this includes improving reading fluency, comprehension strategies, vocabulary development, writing mechanics, organization, and expression of ideas. In Math, this includes mastery of grade-level concepts, problem-solving, and increased mathematical reasoning. In Social Studies & Science, students learn to investigate complex issues by asking questions and using evidence to inform their perspectives.

In 7th grade, students are usually 12 to 13 years old. They are continuing to improve  foundational academic skills. In Math, they solve real-life problems using numerical and algebraic expressions and equations. They deepen their ability to analyze texts they read by using different strategies including analyzing elements and styles of different genres of literature. They use scientific practices to investigate, understand, and explain the world around them. They are also taught skills and perspectives to become informed, active citizens and contributing members of local and  global communities. 

Eighth grade is a year of development and transition for students who are 13 to 14 years of age. It is crucial that students navigate this important year to be ready for success in high school and beyond. During this year, students experience a more challenging academic experience in preparation for the next steps in education. A main goal of 8th grade is to further equip students with the necessary Math, Language, and social skills needed in high school. The students should be active participants in their education by connecting with teachers and counselors. They should also stay connected and get involved in social school communities.
