Elementary School Program (Grades K-5)

Kindergarten is the first formal step in a child's educational journey. It provides a foundational educational experience that promotes the overall development of young children, typically aged 5 to 6. Students will practice basic concepts of math, reading, & writing. They will explore and grow academically, socially, and emotionally through play-based learning activities. 

In first grade, children usually ages 6 & 7 learn to read, write, and develop the skills and confidence they need to become independent readers. They also learn basic math concepts such as counting, addition, and subtraction. Another important aspect of first grade is the introduction to science and social studies. Children also learn about the world around them and develop social and emotional skills. 

In second grade, students usually ages 7 & 8 explore their abilities further across math, science, English, and social studies. A big focus in 2nd grade is reading fluency. Students spend a lot of time mastering fluency and reading comprehension using all the skills taught in previous years. 

They will continue to learn about the world around them and develop social and emotional skills. 

Third grade is the big transitional year of elementary school. Children usually ages 8 & 9 progress from learning to read to reading to learn. Students are also introduced to slightly more complex concepts in Math, Science, & History. In Math, they  are introduced to mathematical operations such as multiplication and division. They continue to learn about the world around them and develop social and emotional skills. 

In 4th grade, students, usually ages 9 & 10, are taught Math, Reading, Writing, & History. They learn to use more advanced reading comprehension strategies to understand text. In Math, they learn to work with larger numbers, understand fractions and decimals, and solve more complex problems. They are expected to be more responsible and are encouraged to become independent learners and develop a growth mindset.

Fifth grade is a major milestone in a child’s academic foundation. It is a pivot point when students, usually ages 10 & 11, can take on more complex work in school. They are becoming more efficient in solving problems across Math, Science, Language, & Geography. It is an important time for students to cement the skills they have gained in previous years as they prepare to explore middle school curriculum.
